Studies Show Divorces in Seniors on the Rise

It is hard to imagine grandma and grandpa getting a divorce. However, new studies conducted by Susan Brown and I-Fen Lin show that divorce rates in older couples are steadily rising. Brown and Lin conducted studies at Bowling Green State University. They found that couples over the age of 50 are twice as more likely to get a divorce in today’s society than they were in 1990.

Studies show that couples were more likely to remain together 20 years ago because divorce was not as socially accepted as it is now. Before, the dissolution of marriage was something that was kept hidden. However, now, people are more understanding of the need to go their separate ways.

Brown and Fen also found that 55% of divorces that occur in the United States include couples who have been together for more than 20 years. One of the factors leading to the rise in senior divorces is that women are more financially independent. With more women moving into the work force, there is not as much of a need for them to depend on their husbands.

Another reason is that people are living longer. With current medicine, technology, and focus on health, the life expectancy has increased. This causes couples to re-evaluate whether or not they want to spend another 20 years together. Some people realize that they are not the same people they were when they first were married. Thus, divorce seems like the right solution.
